The BAFTAs fashion report #1 - the top 10 best dressed

Last night, a the prestigious Royal Opera house, tinseltown came to London. A list celebrities lined the red carpet like sardines, freezing in the almost negative cold that has graced us with its presence in Early 2012. Perhaps the most anticipated event in the British film calendar, money was no object, as the stars pulled out all the stops in the fashion stakes. But who rocked it, and who shocked it?

The Best Dressed

10. Eddie Redmayne
Women love him (notably me), men love him, the fashion pack loves him. As the young actor prepared to hear whether or not he had won the BAFTAs rising star award, he graced the red carpet wearing a satin lapelled tux and quirky bow tie. Finished with patent leather shoes and that hair, there is no doubt that Eddie Redmayne is one to watch. (Ps, that velvet it devine)

9. Jessica Chastain in Oscar De La Renta
There is no doubt in my mind that Jessica Chastain deserved to make the best-dressed list. For starters, there is her choice of designer for what is relatively her first major awards show in the spotlight (Chastain was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, a gong which she lost to her co-star of the same film, The Help, Octavia Spencer), second is her gorgeous but understated jewellery, and thirdly the subtle curls which she adds to her hair. All in all, this Grecian style couture is a winner.

8. Helena Bonham Carter in Giles
Say what you like about Helena, the lady knows how to make an entrance. Her kooky style could have landed her on the worst dressed list for what might seem like the hundredth time in a few years, but I for one think that this ensemble by Giles Deacon is just the right side of odd. Yes, the gloves could do with coming off, but all in all the flattering length and layering of this dress actually go towards making the actress look quite demure, particularly with the hairstyle that for once, doesn't look like a bird's nest. Say what you like about Helena Bonham Carter, but she's on this list for me, because I can't help but love her.

7. Livia Firth in Paul Smith
For a wife who's husband was arguably the one in the limelight for his role in the phenomenal Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Livia Firth's sexy trouser suit is perfect. Not wanting to outshine her husband, Firth opts for Paul Smith with subtle yet striking accessories and a bright green clutch bag. All in all, Livia is on this list because of the way she looks with her husband, the pretty suit works perfectly with her husband's suit (eco friendly, of course, as Livia herself is a go-green campaigner), making them look them the perfect husband wife team. Note: the earrings are vintage Cartier, too...

6. Kristen Wiig in Alberta Ferretti
I can't have been the only one who was surprised at Kristen's effort on the red carpet. Having seen Bridesmaids, I was half-expecting the girl to turn up in a cute-but-short a line dress and oversized blazer. But, she surprised us all, and when watching with my friends last night, we couldn't help but say how stunning she really did look. In a satin, white Ferretti gown, Kristen has chosen perhaps the most flattering of female designers, with the ruched-waist adding effect to her stunning figure. Kudos, Wiig, you've won me over.

5. Jon Hamm
Now, I might be a little biased here, Jon Hamm being perhaps one of the best looking men of all time, but what amazes me here at harlequindarling is his ability to make any suit look so. damn. good. The slicked back hair says to me that this is a gentleman, and I think that we're all suckers for a satin lapel and a bow tie. Nicely done, Hamm.

4. Penelope Cruz in Armani Prive
Penelope Cruz was always going to feature on here, purely for her ability to make such understated, simple gown look so absolutely stunning. The geometric structuring on the top of this dress adds to something which could have been simply boring, and Cruz's simple updo and lack of jewels gives a relaxed feel to the outfit. The fact that the dress was Armani left little to be surprised about, but hey, when you have a winning formula, stick to it!

3.  Shailene Woodley in Dolce and Gabanna
If this blog was rating the best dressed newcomers to the red carpet, Shailene Woodley would have won hands down. The actress, who was present at the awards for her role in the nominated film 'The Descendants' chose Dolce and Gabanna for arguably her first principle awards show. The delicately layered strapless dress, in cream was gorgeous within itself, very romantic and very sexy, but for me, it's the makeup and hair that truly make this look a winner. The bright lipstick and plain updo draw no attention away from the frock, whilst still ensuring that Shailene gets judos for her fashion forwardness. Really, I was far more than impressed with the young actress for her kooky but still very demure style, and for that, I think we need to watch her for things to come.

2. Tilda Swinton in Celine
For me, Tilda Swinton is one of the best dressed women on the planet, still making her mark on awards ceremonies, this dress is a far cry from her Oscars disaster dress of 2011. This dress is simple, elegant, and womanly, whilst still making her look unique and quirky. For me, she's the Alexa Chung of the older generation, and don't even get me started on her terrific hair. Tilda Swinton is an understated icon, and in my opinion, needs more recognition.

And my winner..?
1. Christina Hendricks in, of course Vivienne Westwood
In my opinion, there is no woman more sexy, glamorous, or beautiful than Christina Hendricks. A poster-girl for the normal woman, Christina showed up at the BAFTAs wearing a plunging yet still very demure Vivienna Westwood frock. And what better designer to showcase such killer curves? Hendricks flaunts what she has expertly, yet denies any other knowledge that she is indeed one of the sexiest women on the planet by opting for floor length black. For me, it's the ultimate mix of reserved and sexy, which she always manages to pull off to a tee. We love you, Miss Hendricks.
